How Badly Do You Need Coffee?

Coffee has become such a big part of our culture I mean if you think about it, there is almost a Starbucks located at every corner while Etsy and cute online stores sell shirts that say "But First, Coffee" or "Fueled By Coffee".

Coffee has become a part of our everyday lives but my boyfriend and I decided to cut the coffee in our lives. It was difficult at first but we both thought it would be a healthier option to stick away from coffee and let me tell you it was so hard.

While I was in BU, I would call him and tell him that I would get so many headaches and I would get iritatted from the pain of the coffee withdraws and he would get similar symptoms like mine. It's been a couple months and there are definitely improvements that were made after getting used to not drinking coffee.

Although some people out there desperately need their coffee, while others such as my boyfriend and myself can live without coffee.

According to teendrugabuse.org, although drinking coffee is nowhere near an addiction is is describes to be a "dependency" because when you start having less and less coffee a person can go through a mild "withdrawal" which can lead to headaches and even insomnia.

Additionally, it stated that caffeine is classified as a stimulant because like many drugs, it enhances dopamine signaling in the brain. Dopamine is a chemical that helps control movement and emotions which can make a person feel more awake or alert.

Jen Ramos a youth journalism non profit coordinator drinks coffee for the taste. She stated, " I drink coffee more for taste and a placebo affect. I just like the taste a lot and trying to figure out all the different notes from a roast."

On the other hand, owner of Instagram shopping page Swooning Vintage, Crystal Estrada can't live without coffee. "I've been drinking it since I was three so I need it or I get upset."

I personally remember the days I could not get through the day without coffee but look at me now! But I must say there are other people out there who do not like coffee either.

Jeordy Raines who was a native from LA and is currently living in London chooses tea over coffee. Raines is hypersensitive to caffeine so drinking coffee often gives her anxiety.

"I drink green tea which has a lower caffeine release so I don't get a crash either", Raines said. There are actually benefits of choosing green tea over coffee.

Green tea not only helps a person's metabolism but it also doesn't stain you teeth as badly as coffee does and it isn't acidic!

Boston University student Estevan Mendez hates coffee. Although he works at a coffee shop, he hates coffee because he thinks it is bitter and he just doesn't like the taste of espresso.

Mendez expressed how overrated coffee is, "I don't need anything to keep me awake, I am good with that on my own."

Mendez also thinks that there are people addicted to coffee and although it may not be a bad addiction he thinks it's very expensive.

In reality making coffee at home is obviously way cheaper than buying coffee once or twice a day everyday! To be honest ever since I have been off of coffee not only do I feel good but I am saving money. The coffee I used to buy at Starbucks for instance would be $3-$5 dollars depending on the size I get but now I usually just get refreshers.

In conclusion, not everybody loves coffee and there are many people who drink coffee for various reasons. This blog isn't telling you that you should stop drinking coffee, it is just nice to hear people tell me their reasons that were mentioned above.

For those who say coffee is their necessity, I am all for it and for those who disagree, I am also for it. Coffee is great and just because I do not drink doesn't mean I hate it. It's just a personal choice. Plus it was a very interesting topic, don't you agree?

By the way please follow me on Instagram: @officiallybeareyes. On my Instagram I decided to do a poll and 63% said they need coffee while 37% said they didn't.
